I really love the dynamic range of the camera and wanted to see how I could use harshly contrasted lighting to create shapes, reminiscent of noir films. I thought interior sunlight would work well for this, as there is no ambient light filling in the shadows as there is for exterior shots coming from the blue of the sky.

The sunlight looks great in this experiment, it’s so harsh but never blown out; the detail is retained. I love the pure warmth in both the highlights and the shadows, as there is no cool blue to balance and fill the shadows from the sky. It feels evocative of noir films, especially with the shadows of the blinds adding to the shape of the sunlight.
I also wanted to emulate shooting on filmstock. I found some varied filmstock overlays that I could put over the top of my shots, to fake that film look. I also managed to recreated the halation characteristic of film stock. This occurs between the high-contrast areas of the image and appears as a reddish-orange glow. I think I achieved this characteristic quite well. I really love the asthetic qualities that come with shooting on film, and will use these emulation techniques again in the future, as I think they worked quite well.
